With the United States’ presidential election coming around next week, we know that anxiety might be running high. As much time as we spend thinking about and promoting healthy eating habits, we’re not above a little emotional eating around here, and may well celebrate (or drown our sorrows) with food on election night.
When you’ve got diabetes, emotional eating can be a serious obstacle—high-carb junk foods are so difficult to manage properly, and when you’re already wracked by nerves the last thing you want is a blood sugar rollercoaster lasting far into the night.
So plan ahead, haul a bucket of low-carb snacks to your comfy chair in front of the television, and snack lavishly, knowing that your blood sugar won’t get out of hand. There are more good keto snacks available every day! Here’s a list of our favorites:
Evolved Keto Cups
I bought a sack of these keto chocolate snacks over the weekend, in the hazelnut butter flavor, and I devoured them in about 12 hours. This might be my favorite new low-carb snack. Rich and sweet, no saccharine flavors or strange aftertastes, and heck, for all I knew they might as well have been stuffed with real Nutella. Everyone knows that it’s Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup season—try this fantastic keto alternative in several different flavors. Just 1-2 grams of net carbs per cup.
BHU Foods Keto Bites
These tasty squares are pretty much a retail version of a homemade fat bomb, but at least a little bit healthier. I tried the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavor last week. Made mostly from organic cashews, it was crazy rich, and just a tad sweet, high in satisfying fiber and protein. Delicious and very, very filling.
Alter Eco Dark Chocolate
It’s a good time to be a dark chocolate fan—there are more options and flavors than ever. Alter Eco is a company admirably committed to restoring the fragile rain forests where chocolate is grown. Even better, they’re committed to deliciousness, with a range of dark chocolates (up to 90% cacao) that you can feel good about. We recommend the Super Blackout, with only 5g of net carbs per serving.
Taza Wicked Dark Chocolate
Ready to go even darker? Taza offers a 95% cacao bar, lightly sweetened with toasted coconut.
4505 Cracklins
Is there a difference between chicharrones and pork cracklings? At 4505 there is. The chicharrones are patiently stripped of fat before frying, resulting in a light and airy crisp. “Cracklins” are a different story—they leave on a thick layer of fat, and there’s nothing light or airy about them. These fatty morsels are “pork rinds for the true pork rind lover.”
Moon Cheese
Cheese crisps made from 100% cheese, this is a nice example of a snack product that is probably actually a whole lot better than the non-keto version it’s trying to replace. (Don’t look up the ingredients in Cheetos, it’s ugly!) Moon Cheese comes in six flavors, and all of them are high protein, high flavor, and low-carb.
Whisps Cheese Crisps
Another crispy-cheesy winner, Whisps come in seven flavors, including new Tangy Ranch and Nacho. These crisps are also 100% cheese and have 3 or fewer grams of net carbohydrates per serving.
Fat Snax Crackers
Maybe the best keto crackers on the market, Fat Snax crackers are made with almond flour and come in sea salt, cheddar and everything flavors. Just 1-2 grams of net carbs per serving, perfect for dipping into guac and any other low-carb dip.
Catalina Crunch Cookies
It’s pretty much an Oreo cookie, keto-fied. Each of these cookies, made with high-protein and high-fiber flours, has 2.5g of net carbs.
Perfect Keto Cookies
For chocolate chip, double chocolate or peanut butter cookies, try Perfect Keto’s cookies. These little guys are made with healthy nuts and grass-fed butter. Perfect Keto was founded by a doctor that insists on only the healthiest and cleanest ingredients.
Dang Coconut Chips
Beautiful toasted slices of coconut meat offer a sweet and crispy keto alternative to potato chips. At 5g net carbs per serving—15g in a bag—coconut chips can hit that salty spot without blowing your blood sugar control to smithereens. Dang has two keto flavors: Simply Salted, and Tropical Mango.
