While the causes and triggers of type 1 diabetes remain unknown, researchers from Australia have found a link between type 1 diabetes and enteroviruses, which can lead to cold, flu and even meningitis. The researchers conducted an analysis of a number of studies and found that children with type 1 diabetes are almost 10 times more likely to show signs of enterovirus infection than children without the disease. The study was published in the online edition of BMJ.
The researchers could not determine a causal relation between infection and type 1 diabetes and said further research was necessary in order to establish if enteroviruses were a cause in the development of type 1 diabetes.
