Dog Days

With my husband out of town, I’m in charge of the dog walks for our mini-schnauzer, Noodle. Tromping around with her in our ice and snow packed neighborhood, I was meditating on how dog ownership is like diabetes. Both are chronic conditions (one by choice, one not), both require constant care. You can’t leave your doggy too long without a walk; you can’t ignore your diet or your sugars for too long without some sort of payback. Both thrive on exercise and good nutrition; and both definitely require a sense of humor. There are days (like today) that I definitely wish someone would take over both the diabetes and the dog, but in the end, both depend (at least for these few days) exclusively on me.

O.K., I know, dogs are more fun than diabetes. I didn’t say it was a perfect metaphor:)
