Gut Reaction: The Link Between Gut Bacteria and Type 1 Diabetes
The study could have important implications for identifying the disease at a very early stage, delaying its onset or even preventing it altogether. Dr. Julia Greenstein, vice president of discovery research at JDRF, which helped fund the study, says that the work is very preliminary, but points toward strategies for prevention that haven’t yet been explored.

Low Carb Cinnamon Apple Scones
Low Carb Cinnamon Apple Scones
I love apples and I love apple season. There is nothing quite like standing in an orchard in the cool, crisp fall air and biting into a freshly picked apple. Of course, I have to severely limit my apple intake now, as they are not exactly low carb or. Still, I like to find ways to work them into recipes, like in these low carb cinnamon apple scones so I can enjoy apple season without feeling deprived. And a little apple extract can help boost that flavor even more in these low carb scones.

Faustman’s Research on BCG Vaccine for Reversal of Type 1 Diabetes Continues
Faustman says that her work has raised the ire of some scientists and organizations for two reasons: It runs counter to the prevailing research emphasis to either prevent type 1 diabetes, or reverse it in people who have been recently diagnosed with diabetes and, at the time, ran into a stiff political headwind from embryonic stem cell researchers.

Still got zucchini coming out your ears? Thank goodness it’s such a useful low carb vegetable, coming in handy for everything from pasta to cake. For this beautiful zucchini ricotta tart, I simply sliced it very thin on a mandolin slicer. This makes a fabulous side dish or a full “Meatless Monday” meal.
Half of US adults have diabetes or pre-diabetes
Half of US adults have diabetes or pre-diabetes, study says
New research suggests that half of all U.S. adults have diabetes or pre-diabetes. The study of government health surveys echoes previous research and shows numbers increased substantially between 1988 and 2012 although they mostly leveled off after 2008. Overall, 12 percent to 14 percent of adults had diagnosed diabetes in 2012, the latest data available. Most of that is Type 2 diabetes, the kind linked with obesity and inactivity.
